Bubblie, Cruz's most distinctive quality is his adherence to the principle of limited government and dedication to serving the American people (even before his party). For example, in Iowa he openly opposed federal ethanol subsidies to corn farmers, which many thought would be political suicide. As a result, Gov. Terry Branstad (the Republican governor of the state who favored the subsidies), waged a campaign against Cruz. The conventional wisdom was for any candidate to support the subsidies in order to win the vote of Iowans. However, Cruz did not show the slightest appeasement and still won Iowa.
